William Blake -- English poet, painter, engraver, and visionary mystic whose hand-illustrated series of lyrical and epic poems, beginning with Songs of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794), form one of the most strikingly original and independent bodies of work in the Western cultural tradition. Blake is now regarded as one of the earliest and greatest figures of Romanticism. Yet Blake was ignored by the public of his day and was called mad because he was single-minded and unworldly; William Blake lived on the edge of poverty and died in neglect.

Blake, William (1757-1827), English poet, painter, and engraver, who created a unique form of illustrated verse; his poetry, inspired by mystical vision, is among the most original, lyric, and prophetic in the language. Blake was born in London. Following his apprenticeship to an engraver, in 1784 he set up a printshop. For the rest of his life Blake eked out a living as an engraver and illustrator, aided by his wife. |
